Career Transition For Dancers' educational scholarships provide
current and former professional dancers with vital sources of support. These grants are meant to serve as a financial "bridge" to help dancers initiate an academic or retraining process toward the acquisition of a required degree or an important new skill. Since 1985, CTFD has
awarded educational scholarships and entrepreneurial grants totaling more than $2.5 million. As a result, clients are attending, or have graduated from more than 170 colleges, universities, conservatories, and other specialized schools, both here and abroad.
The Caroline H. Newhouse Scholarship Fund
Caroline H. Newhouse was the passionate and active philanthropic "angel" for CTFD, The Caroline & Theodore Newhouse Center for Dancers, and through her generosity the Caroline H. Newhouse Scholarship Fund was established.
Caroline Newhouse passed away at her home in Connecticut on April 26th, 2003. She was 93. Alexander J. Dubé, Executive Director and Cynthia G. Fischer, President, stated
"We are profoundly saddened at the loss of the heart of CTFD - Caroline H. Newhouse. Dancers, staff and Board members will sorely miss her wit, wisdom and her compassion. We were blessed to have enjoyed her vision, her support, and most precious of all, her friendship. This year's annual gala will be dedicated in Caroline Newhouse's memory. She was our inspiration. We extend our deepest sympathy to the entire Newhouse family."
Through the extremely generous support of Ms. Newhouse, together with grants from the performing arts unions, members of CTFD's Board of Directors and National Advisory Board, as well as clients, and friends, the organization awards grants to eligible professional dancers. Career Transition For Dancers provides limited financial assistance for tuition and retraining or seed money central to fledgling business enterprises for current and former professional dancers who can meet CTFD's eligibility requirements. Eligibility for financial grants is based on work history as a professional dancer. (Choreographing or teaching dance is not applicable for meeting eligibility requirements.)
In 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, CTFD provided dancers, nationwide with scholarships totaling $939,289. These scholarships helped dancers pursue a wide range of educational and retraining opportunities, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees, as well as skill and vocational certification.
Funding is made possible in part by the Caroline H. Newhouse Scholarship Fund, Rudolf Nureyev Educational Scholarship Fund, Clarence Y. Palitz, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, Agnes de Mille Educational Scholarship Fund, Carmen Diana Barth Educational Scholarship fund, the Violet Blumenfeld Scholarship Program, the Lillian Sayers Scholarship Fund, and the Sono Osato Program for Graduate Studies.
CTFD reserves the right to alter its criteria and guidelines for grant awards based on its resources, or for any other reasons deemed necessary by its Board of Directors.
