Programs & Services: Career Counseling

Since 1985, CTFD has provided for more than 37,000 hours of career-counseling to dancers nationwide.

Career Transition For Dancers offers a variety of career-counseling programs - all completely free-of-charge - for eligible dancers to utilize at every stage of their transition process.

Career Counseling
One-on-one career-counseling forms the core of CTFD's programs for dancers. After an initial on-site or telephone intake interview, dancers who meet CTFD's eligibility guidelines can make appointments with one of CTFD's career counselors. This individualized service enables the organization to provide highly personalized guidance that recognizes the uniqueness of each dancer. Recognizing that transition is an individual process, services are offered on an open-ended, as needed basis to fit each dancer's needs, style, and pace in making a transition.

A sample of the services offered in these counseling sessions includes:

  • discussing the emotional side of dealing with change
  • exercises to assess an individual's abilities, skills, values and interests
  • help with identifying and examining career options
  • creating an effective plan to pursue a given career path
  • assistance with identifying undergraduate or graduate degree programs and/or specialized certification programs
  • help in locating additional funding sources for education and retraining
  • techniques for networking within a chosen field
  • assistance with résumé preparation and job search methods
  • assistance with cover letter text and presentation
  • help with initial approach for specific job openings
  • employment interview strategies
  • negotiating for responsibilities and compensation in a new job
