CTFD's 2003 Gala raised over $836,000 in support of CTFD's mission!
Underwriters for this event were The Family of Caroline H. Newhouse,
Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation and Condé Nast Publications.
Caroline H. Newhouse, distinguished painter and sculptor, member of the Career Transitions For Dancers (CTFD) Board of Directors, and a major benefactor of the annual Gala passed away on Saturday, April 26 at her weekend home in Roxbury, Connecticut. She was 93. Ms. Newhouse was the widow of Theodore Newhouse, one of the three founding brothers of the Newhouse communications company.
Caroline H. Newhouse was the passionate and active philanthropic "angel" for CTFD, The Caroline & Theodore Newhouse Center for Dancers. Through her generosity the Caroline H. Newhouse Scholarship Fund was established. She served for numerous years as the Co-Chair of the annual Galas, including the 9th Gala GOTTA DANCE, A Dance Tribute to Hollywood which was held on Monday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m. at City Center. Co-Chair was Amy Bermant Adler, her granddaughter. This year's gala was dedicated in Caroline Newhouse's memory.
Alexander J. Dubé, Executive Director and Cynthia G. Fisher, President, stated "We are profoundly saddened at the loss of the heart of CTFD - Caroline H. Newhouse. Dancers, staff and Board members will sorely miss her wit, wisdom and her compassion. An accomplished artist herself, she understood the cost of true artistry and was a kindred spirit to our dancers. We were blessed to have enjoyed her vision, her support, and most precious of all, her friendship. She was our inspiration. We extend our deepest sympathy to the entire Newhouse family."
"'Gotta Dance! A Dance Tribute to Hollywood' was more spectacular than ever!... By the 'Hooray for Hollywood' finale the gala audience had been thoroughly dazzled."
Writes Robert Johnson of The Star-Ledger
AWARDS at the 9th Annual Gala
The gracious and beautiful Arlene Dahl presented the Career Transition For Dancers' Award honoring the late, great Donald O'Connor. Maurice Hines then honored Fayard Nicholas (89-years-young) with the Career Transition For Dancers' Award, and Fayard, with his wife, Katherine Hopkins-Nicholas, returned the favor with energetic singing and dancing to the full-of-fun "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" from Sun Valley Serenade.
Continuing in an elegant vein, the ever-exquisite Cyd Charisse was honored with the Movado Dance Award by presenter Bebe Neuwirth who, in a change of mood, joined Ann Reinking and a high-octane company of slinky dance-hall sizzlers in "Big Spender" from Sweet Charity. A delicious interlude was provided by the fabled Esther Williams (escorted by two "beach-boys" in skimpy Speedos) who presented Turner Entertainment Co. with the Career Transition For Dancers' Award after an introduction by Robert Osborne. Accepting on behalf of the company was its President and COO, Roger L. Mayer.

CTFD's 2002 Gala raised over $880,000 in support of CTFD's mission!
In her review of CTFD's 2001 Annual Gala, Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times described the evening as . . . "dazzling... show-stopping... this annual event is unlike any other seen in New York."
The Annual Gala, held each year in the fall, provides CTFD with a wonderful opportunity to present a performance featuring a unique combination of some of America's greatest dance companies and dancers. The performance is followed by a glittering post-performance "supper with the stars."
Gala performers generously donate their time and their talent to raise funds in order to ensure the continuation of the programs and services at CTFD, thereby coining the phrase... "by dancers... for dancers."
This special evening event continues to grow and has become known to all who appreciate dance as "THE dance event of the season."
